Strong Aberdeen side denied three points by Saints
Aberdeen didn't have the same dream start to the 2011/12 campaign as that of the 2010/11 campaign, but the Dons showed sure signs of improvement as they drew 0-0 with St Johnstone.
It was a nice day for it and Aberdeen dominated the first ten minutes. Inside the first minute a Pawlett run down the left resulted in a cross, but Pawlett's delivery was snatched from Darren Mackie by Peter Enckelman. After ten minutes a delightful free-kick from Foster, who had a good game and deserved man-of-the-match, went just wide. Three minutes later a good switch from Fraser Fyvie gave Foster another chance to shoot from just outside the box, but Enckelman made a good save. A minute later more good play from Fyvie, who also played a good game, led to a corner for the Dons, but Enckelman denied Mawéné from heading it home with a good catch.

The first chance for the Saints came in the 17th minute when Liam Craig whipped in a corner for Sheridan, but his header went well wide. 5 minutes later a collision between Enckelman, Fraser Wright and Mackie saw the Dons striker get a fair talking to when he was clearly challenging for the ball and made no intentional contact with the Saints goalkeeper or Fraser. After twenty-five minutes it was Aberdeen's turn to suffer an injury as Pawlett took a nasty head collision and was down for a while, but played on after treatment.
Three minutes later Aberdeen had two corners in quick succession going to Mawéné, but he could finish neither of them. In the 38th minute a great run by Foster and a slip onto the Ball by the Saints' Mackay saw another corner go Aberdeen's way, but the keeper took it off of Considine. A short back pass from Mawéné nearly saw trauma for Aberdeen, but Gonzalez recovered well. With a minute to go until the break Fyvie put in a great ball for Vernon, but his shot was wild.

After Marcus Haber replacing Liam Craig during the interval, St Johnstone changed to a 4-4-2 formation in the second half and dominated the early stages, with some good chances being snuffed out by the rock-solid Dons defence. Aberdeen's first chance of the half came after ten minutes when a Foster free-kick gave the Dons a three-on-one, but the referee forced a retake. Foster hit it high into the wind, which gave the ball a kick on and it nearly went in from the halfway line. Minutes later St Johnstone won a corner, but Foster cleared. Three minutes later Mackie broke clear, but Enckelman denied. The resulting corner saw Milsom's high ball get taken by the wind a Enckelman just saved a near goal. Milsom crossed again but Enckelman, who had a fine game, stole the ball from Andrew Considine.

St Johnstone made a mess of two more chances after some fine defending from Mawéné. After 18 minutes of the second half, a Fyvie cross hit the crossbar and nearly went in, but it was scrambled off the line as the fans cried for goal-line technology. Two minutes later Ryan Jack was very harshly sent-off for a late challenged that deserved a yellow-card but nothing more. The first Dons substitution of the match came soon after when Peter Pawlett was replaced by debutant Kari Arnason. Fraser Wright was then booked for a tackle on Fyvie that looked as bad as Ryan Jack's send-off. A Milsom cross went to the head of Fyvie, but St Johnstone cleared for a corner. After 75 minutes Stevie May replaced Sheridan and Moon replaced Robertson, and for Aberdeen Magennis replaced Vernon. Magennis then wasted a good chance but was harshly given and handball minutes later when his effort from a long ball was saved for a corner by Enckelman.
Kevin Moon was booked in the dying seconds as the Saints held on as Aberdeen were the better side and should maybe have gone on to win the game in which was an encouraging start from a strong-looking Aberdeen side.
