A youngster at Sheffield Wednesday, in January 2007, McArdle signed permanently for Rochdale for an undisclosed fee on a 30 month contract. He scored a goal at Wembley in the 2008 League Two Play-Off Final but Rochdale were beaten 3-2 by Stockport County. In May 2010, he signed a contract with Aberdeen and then later that month he made his full debut for Northern Ireland on 26 May 2010 against Turkey in a friendly. He was often played out of position at full-back until Craig Brown took the helm at Pittodrie. Brown began playing Rory at his more suited position of central defence. McArdle went on to score a dramatic late equaliser in a quarter-final Scottish Cup tie against St. Mirren, which took the tie to a replay, which the Dons won at Pittodrie. Rory has been used cover for the usual back four for most of the 2011/12 season so far.
