Dons late late show...
Active Nation Scottish Cup 5th Round
Raith Rovers 1
Williamson (31)
Aberdeen 1
McDonald (90+5)
The Dons are still in the Scottish Cup, but only just.
As the Scottish press were sitting typing up their stories in the Stark's Park press box about another Cup disaster for the Dons against lower league opposition, up popped midfielder Gary McDonald to grab a last gasp equaliser in the 5th and final minute of injury time.
What relief.
On a heavy pitch the Dons players tired towards the end but they never gave up and no one can question their character.
Aberdeen started the game strongly and their movement and shape was good. Raith keeper McGurn had made two good saves from Darren Mackie but despite all their possession the Dons failed to create any other real clear cut chances and they were unable to get the break of the ball in the muddy penalty box.
Raith Rovers then went ahead against the run of play in the 31st minute of a first half that Aberdeen had totally controlled. A fantastic volley from Williamson.
The Dons second half performance was not as good and after an early miss by Paton they created little. As the game progressed the pitch cut up badly and made it almost impossible for the Dons to get any kind of passing going and at the other end they had Jamie Langfield to thank for keeping them in the tie with a quite brilliant save.
Mark McGhee threw on Aluko, Pawlett and latterly Diamond in a bid to save the game. It was not until the last five minutes that the Dons started creating some real pressure and a Sone inspired revival finally produced the deserved equaliser.
Raith will be feeling hard done by after this match. The Dons live to fight another day.
The replay has been pencilled in for a week on Tuesday (16th Feb) at Pittodrie but the date has still to be confirmed. As soon as it is we will let you know on RedWeb and via our text alert service.
