Fred Martin was one of these players who joined the club playing in a different position to the one he achieved fame with. In Fred's case the club knew nothing of his transformation from Inside Forward to Goalkeeper as the switch took place during his National Service. He was such a natural between the sticks that on his return to Pittodrie he continued in the role.
Martin had joined the club from Carnoustie Panmure in October 1946 and made his debut for the Dons in season 1949-50 before establishing himself as first choice keeper the following term. He had great ability in reading a game he used his large frame to good advantage. His good form brought international recognition in 1952 when he represented the Scottish League and two years later he won his first full international cap and represented his country in the 1954 World Cup.
Fred was a member of the 1955 championship side and played in three losing Scottish cup finals and the League Cup final success of 1956. The twilight of his career was dogged by injury and after making 291 appearances for the club Fred retired in 1960.
